Whether it’s tales of chucking rocks at firecrackers in Colombia or relics from a road trip around Nicaragua, Atkinsons’ owner and head roaster Ian Steel always has a good story to tell about his latest expedition to origin.
‘Meeting the farmers who supply our beans allows us to build relationships – and we’ve been able to see the quality of their beans develop year by year,’ explains Ian.
Back home in Lancaster’s coffee quarter, Ian and the team pull together to supply not only their own trio of cafes with roasted and rested beans, but also hundreds of other specialist outlets across the region. The small tribe of machines roast a range of batch sizes almost every day and visitors are always welcome to have a peek inside the roastery behind the shop.
‘MEETING THE FARMERS WHO SUPPLY OUR BEANS ALLOWS US TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS’
However, you don’t need to visit to get an Atkinsons fix as its letterbox-friendly subscriptions are super efficient and have just extended to include an office service. Fans can also catch up on the team’s latest globetrotting trips and meet the farmers behind the latest single origin beans via the online journal.
