It’s amazing how far Crankhouse has come since it started applying heat to bean in 2014. Nowadays, it’s a household name for coffee lovers in the South West, who give the nod of approval when spotting the beans in cafes up and down this corner of the country.
Owner and alchemist Dave Stanton has probably nabbed the most picturesque spot in Devon to house his roastery and coffee school. In countryside on the edge of Dartmoor, he can escape the hustle and bustle of city life and get back to simple pleasures, like the magic of turning beans into a complex and full-bodied brew.
Within the converted barn, Dave selects green beans with exciting and diverse characteristics and roasts them in a way to preserve and enhance their flavour. ‘I work with an Italian 1995 Petroncini TT7.5, my senses and a little science,’ he says.

Look out for Crankhouse in speciality establishments across the South West and further afield – sometimes you’ll even find a bespoke blend creation. Even better, book on to one of Dave’s coffee courses, regular cuppings or roastery tours for the full Crankhouse experience.
